What Is Black Friday & Cyber Monday?
Historically, Black Friday and Cyber Monday were two separate events originating from the United States. Black Friday started as a major sales day for brick-and-mortar stores. The phrase ‘Black Friday’ was coined in Philadelphia in the 1960s when police officers used it to describe the heavy influx of shoppers and vehicles into the city the day after Thanksgiving. Eventually, this term was adopted by retailers nationwide to describe the surge in sales on this day that moved them from being ‘in the red’ (a financial deficit) to being ‘in the black’ (profitable).
Cyber Monday was introduced much later in 2005 by the National Retail Federation to promote online shopping and boost the sales of e-commerce brands. The organisation came up with the term after it noticed a spike in online purchases on the Monday following Thanksgiving — people returned to work but continued to shop from their office computers because they wanted to grab the best online deals.
These two events have since merged into a single extended sale period — Black Friday traditionally falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving, followed by Cyber Monday on the coming Monday.
Today, Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become a global retail phenomenon, expanding well beyond its original timeframe and geographical scope, with many brands launching early Black Friday promotions and extending their sales beyond Cyber Monday. It also signals the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season as consumers tend to buy festive gifts for loved ones during this period to take advantage of the lower prices and value-for-money deals. In 2025, Black Friday and Cyber Monday fall on 28 November and 1 December respectively.
