One of fashion’s most talented content creators, 25-year-old Yan Yan Chan is a petite, fresh-faced beauty who was born in Hong Kong but spent the better part of her life in Sydney, Australia. Growing up around a father who produced music for a living meant that some of his creative influence rubbed off on her. She would later go on to study film, photography and the visual arts – in the process, she discovered that the creative industry is her calling.

Yan Yan created her blog when she was 16 years old to document her creative endeavours – in the early days, she posted photos of her family and friends that she had taken with film cameras. However, as her blog took off and evolved into something bigger, she turned it into a full-time job and started pointing her lens increasingly at fashion.

Effortlessly cool and stylish, Yan Yan has a laid-back personal style but does not shy away from making big fashion statements when the occasion calls for it. In this collaboration, she makes a strong case for bright colours and bold prints in the middle of winter by putting a unique spin on the CHARLES & KEITH Winter 2019 collection. The featured accessories include a pair of fluorescent mules and colour-blocked snake print boots, which she styled with her signature flair.

You are born in Hong Kong, grew up in Sydney, Australia, and have spent some time in New York City. Which of these cities – or any other in the world – have helped the most to cultivate your love for fashion and shape your personal style?

In the early years of my adolescence, I did not have as much money or access to international brands so I grew up with a wardrobe of Aussie labels and a lot of them encapsulates that easy-going beach lifestyle. I still shop at these labels but it has been nice to introduce other pieces that I’ve collected along the way from travelling and living abroad.

Every place that I’ve visited has influenced the way I dress. When you spend time abroad by yourself, it really pushes you to step out of your comfort zone and see things differently. I have spent a lot of time in Paris and New York City and both of these cities have really allowed me to grow into my own skin. The women there inspired me to do so.

Can you tell us more about how you became a fashion influencer?

I started my blog when I was 16 and still in high school. I loved film, photography and art and wanted a space where I was able to express myself creatively outside the classroom. I was never strategic about growing my followers. Everything happened quite organically. However, working with brands and other creatives has given me extra exposure in the past few years.

You are a rising star in the fashion world and now work as a brand consultant and creative content creator. As someone who frequently works with fashion brands, how do you stay true to your own personal style when creating content?

It is so important to surround yourself with a strong network of like-minded people who have your back and bring out the best in you. I honestly create the best when I am not aware of what other people are doing or saying. It is all about empowering yourself, believing in your ideas and producing them with complete conviction. It sounds cheesy but it is true. Focus on what truly inspires you and makes you happy because then you can produce your best work!

In your opinion, what are the Winter 2019 trends to watch out for?

I am not much of a trend girl, but I have been obsessed with beige, creamy tones that are styled with a bright pop of colour.

We love how you have styled the pieces that you picked out from the CHARLES & KEITH Winter 2019 collection. If you must choose just one, what would be your favourite item?

I love the mini top handle saddle bag, especially when worn with a laid-back outfit and colours that complement.
