What gives you adrenaline?

RD: Actually I am really not an adrenaline junkie, so I hardly go seeking for an adrenaline rush. It comes more naturally, when it happens it happens. I don’t know, maybe being in love is a type of adrenaline as well?

Your perception of red.

RD: Power. Red is also my mother’s favourite color so although I personally don’t wear red very often, it is the color that holds a special meaning to me.

Things that capture your attention.

RD: This is a hard question, I mean, so many things capture my attention throughout the day. But I would say that I like to look at architecture and interior design when I’m out and about. I highly appreciate it when the details are done well. I love minimalism and am obsessed with cement walls and floors.

How do you keep spontaneous?

RD: I guess by my often spontaneous travel plans. I love to do random and spontaneous things so I also like to surround myself with friends who can be equally spontaneous.

Unlikely superheroes, your anime muse.

RD: Maybe Chibiusa “Black Lady” from Sailor Moon. She’s so hot and evil looking. Also Sailor Mars, Sailor Moon, Boa Hancock.

How did you end up with an interest in anime?

RD: I’ve been watching anime for as long as I can remember. When I was very little, maybe the age of 3 or 4, I remember watching anime in Beijing. We would visit Beijing every summer and winter. I remember so clearly the anime that I watched. Ranma, Saint Seiya would be the first few. Then later on I became obsessed with Sailor Moon and watched some Dragonball and Slam Dunk.

First few anime collections.

RD: My first anime collection would be Sailor Moon and my first manga collection should be Ranma…I think.

Discoveries from anime.

RD: Honestly I’m not sure if I made any discoveries but I like how in most anime they relay a positive message about friendship and being righteous and to be a true person.

What has anime taught you?

RD: Never thought about this…maybe subconsciously it taught me to be creative? Who knows…but I also believe that you are kind of born with sense and creativity.

Which scenes left the biggest mark in your memory?

RD: Wow, a lot of scenes. Scene from Saint Seiya that I watched when I was only 3 or 4. A lot of scenes from Sailor Moon since I re-watched it over and over again. When Gohan turned into the ape, that also really burned into my memory when I was little.

Have they shaped your aesthetics?

RD: I wouldn’t say that anime has shaped by aesthetics. I find inspiration in all sorts of things and places. Although I’m a very positive and out going person, when it comes to design I tend to be drawn towards darker vibes.

What parts of your personality can we see from your designs?

RD: Maybe my darker or more edgy side.

24 HOURS

Morning A perfect day for me in Shanghai would be waking up and grabbing a coffee at Sumerian Coffee

At around 12:00 I will go to my studio and work with my team on our projects.

12:40 I will most likely grab lunch with my friends or family around the area where my studio is which is Sinan road.

15:00 I really enjoy visiting art galleries and often go with my staff to find inspiration. One of my favorite galleries is the Long Museum or Power station of art. It’s also a great location to take photos outdoor.

17:00 Go back to my office to finish off more work

19:30 Head to dinner with friends

21:30 The night continues! My friends and I would grab some drinks before the night ends

23:00 Arrive home to rest and relax

04 THINGS

I’m sort of a night person – I can’t sleep early!

My mind is most creative during the dark hours of the night.

When I was younger I was obsessed with all things vampire.

I’m drawn to dark and eerie vibes…I’m not sure why but I think a lot
