“What a lot of people don't know about me is that I am a complete procrastinator when it comes to planning outfits. I am always afraid that I will change my mind at the last minutes, so I just wait till the hours right before a photoshoot or an event to put them together.”

Nikia, also known to her followers as Mad Maven, confesses that she is a “desert girl by nature”. In fact, it is the first thing that you would notice in a recent blog entry, which features the folkish and rustic interior of her apartment – potted cacti of all shapes and sizes sit in every corner of her enviable home.

It would be no surprise then that the style blogger will be attending Coachella, which will be taking place in the vast Colorado Desert. With her distinct feminine-meets-bohemian style, the music and arts festival is a haven filled with photo opportunities for Nikia: “Sometimes, you just have to work with what the great universe has given you!”

However, Coachella is not just a fashion photoshoot for Nikia. Ever since she was a child, her older sisters and musical brother-in-law had instilled in her a deep love for music. If you are ever in Downtown Los Angeles, you may encounter her in a dark jazz lounge, sipping on a glass of wine and enjoying great tunes all by herself.

Considering how the self-proclaimed “desert girl” is a fashion blogger, designer and stylist all in one, we were excited to seek out her advice on the style essentials to invest in this music festival season. She points us in the right direction in the conversation below.

As a style blogger and jewellery designer with a background in fashion design, you are obviously a very creative person. How do you think your work in fashion styling has complemented your other creative pursuits?

Dabbling in fashion design has honed my eye for colour and style. For example, I better understand how to pair colours and textures not only in my outfits, but also in the backdrops that I photograph against. These are elements that you must be able to get a hang of when styling and blogging.

Your photographs are always thoughtfully conceptualised and beautifully composed. Can you describe the creative and production processes behind each shoot – what inspires you, and how do you ensure that you are able to execute the ideas behind the images?

I am inspired by colours, textures and nature – if we work with what the great universe has given us, we will realise that there is a lot to be explored. I believe that the styling process is more important than the production process when it comes to capturing a great shot, and the key to one is to accessorise well. But of course, backlighting and an ample amount of natural light are essential too.

Having worked extensively with brands on design and styling projects, what do you think is essential for a successful collaboration? Tell us more about how you consistently manage to bring out the uniqueness of every piece you wear.

Professionalism and communication – it is important to understand that compromises can be made in a collaborative process. I bring out a different life and original personality in every piece that I wear by accessorising. The blandest outfit can be jazzed up with a striking lip colour, stylish head accessory or eye-catching statement earrings.

This summer, we know that you would be heading to Coachella. Have you already planned your outfits for the event (if so, please describe them) and what are some of the fashion must-haves that you would always bring with you to music festivals? Among the pieces that you have chosen from the CHARLES & KEITH collection, which one is your favourite, and why?

That is a funny question. What a lot of people don’t know about me is that I am a complete procrastinator when it comes to planning outfits. I am always afraid that I will change my mind at the last minute, so I just wait till the hours right before a photoshoot or an event to put them together. But you will probably catch me in a standout pair of sunnies (my favourite pair is the pink round ones from CHARLES & KEITH, I wear them all the time!), multiple cool hats, different shades of bold lipsticks, fun colourful earrings and the most comfortable yet fashionable shoes at Coachella – they are my fashion must-haves for music festivals.

Of all the acts performing at Coachella this year, which are the ones that you look forward to seeing the most? And, if you able to style just one of these bands, which one would it be and why?

I was hoping that you’d ask me this one! BØRNS is by far the act that I am most excited to catch because I love both his music and his style, which leads me to my next answer. If I can style any of the acts at Coachella, it’d still be BØRNS. He has such a fun and unique fashion sense. So, if you could set up a nice little styling session for BØRNS and me, I would greatly appreciate it.
